We Stand In Solidarity

No More Injustice

On July 1, 2021, Herby restaurant will not be celebrating Canada Day. We will be open for our regular business hours, and will be donating a portion of our sales to Toronto Indigenous Harm Reduction. Donation buttons are also available on our UberEATS and DoorDash pages, so please consider ordering from these apps and donate. Here at Herby restaurant, we will continue to educate ourselves and find ways to support indigenous communities.

Herby Wall Art

The Story Behind Our Wall Art

The art was inspired by THE CONFERENCE OF THE BIRDS an ancient Persian poem.

The Conference of The Birds is a poem written by a famous ancient Persian poet, Faridud-Din Attar, commonly known as Attar of Nishapur, in 1177 AD.
It consists of more than 4500 lines.

Birds arrange a meeting to decide who is to be their sovereign. The wisest bird, the hoopoe, suggests that they should find Simorgh, the legendary mythical bird.
The birds begin their journey, which consisted of seven difficult stages, from the initial Valley of the Quest to the regions of Love, Knowledge, Detachment, Unity, Awe, Bewilderment, and finally Nothingness. Throughout the journey, many of the birds either quit or perish, and only 30 of them end up making it to the end.

There, they come to understand that they themselves are the Simorgh ( si = thirty, morgh = bird). Just like the sun reflected in the mirror, Simorgh can be found in anything/anyone who seeks to see who they truly are inside.

The painting on our wall was done by Chef Javad’s friend, Navid Fard, a Toronto-based Iranian/Canadian contemporary artist!
His abstract and figurative interpretation of this poem beautifully and perfectly complements the restaurant’s environment.

YALDA

Yalda (means birth) is one of the most ancient Persian festivals where Iranians celebrate the winter solstice on the longest night of the year. The celebration includes pomegranates, watermelons, nuts, and dried fruits (the last remaining fruits from summer). Pomegranate is a symbol of birth and its bright red seeds symbolize the growth of life!
